UPDATE: Trinity Christian has clinched a thrilling 27-12 victory over University Christian in the Region 1-1A final, propelling them into the state semifinals. This decisive win was marked by a remarkable comeback after trailing by 12 points in the first half.
In a dramatic showdown held Friday night in Jacksonville, the Conquerors demonstrated resilience against their crosstown rivals. Despite allowing UC to start six possessions on their side of the field, Trinity’s defense, led by standout cornerback Terrell Pinkney, rose to the occasion. Pinkney, a former outside linebacker, made two interceptions in the fourth quarter, including a crucial pick in the end zone and one returned for a touchdown, sealing the game.
Freshman running back Micah Anderson played a pivotal role, scoring a 46-yard touchdown to give Trinity a commanding 20-12 lead with just five minutes left. “It feels good. I just feel like we need to go to state,” Anderson stated. “We ain’t finished yet,” highlighting the team’s determination as they aim for their first state title appearance since 2021.
Throughout the game, University Christian had numerous opportunities to extend their lead but failed to capitalize, scoring all their points in the second quarter. The Christians managed to reach Trinity territory 12 times but could only muster 34 rushing yards on 33 attempts, showcasing a dominant defensive effort from the Conquerors.
Injuries plagued Trinity, losing both of their starting cornerbacks before and during the game. However, Pinkney and freshman Camren Hall stepped up, effectively shutting down UC’s passing game. Pinkney, who has drawn interest from major colleges, including Michigan, expressed his strategy, stating, “Stay deep, don’t get beat… I see the ball, get the ball.”
Despite the victory, there are areas for improvement as Trinity prepares for the upcoming state semifinals next week. They will face a challenging road ahead, uncertain of their opponent or whether they will host the game, as the final four teams will be re-seeded based on the FHSAA points rankings.
Coach Dorminey acknowledged the need for refinement, as the Conquerors struggled with penalties, blocked punts, and turnovers, which could prove detrimental in future matchups. “Most of what we did Friday night would get us bounced from the playoffs,” he cautioned.
As the Conquerors celebrate this hard-fought victory, their eyes are set firmly on the state championship. With the momentum from this win, Trinity Christian is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming playoff rounds, embodying the spirit of resilience and determination that defines high school football.
