Local restaurant owner Wendy Trueit has taken the lead in providing free meals to first responders and grieving families, demonstrating heartfelt solidarity in a time of crisis.
In the wake of the tragedy, Trueit, co-owner of Twisted Seasons Bistro, began offering complimentary meals to those affected. “We’ve had people from the U.S., Connecticut, where they’ve had mass shootings there that reached out, ‘What can we do to help?'” she shared. The response has been overwhelming, with donations pouring in from around the world.
Trueit estimates that they have received thousands of dollars from hundreds of supporters globally, all dedicated to feeding healthcare workers, paramedics, police officers, firefighters, and families mourning their loved ones. “I never planned to have people send me money to help feed the people; I wasn’t concerned about that,” she admitted.
Community member Ted Ember, traveling from nearby Fort St. John, expressed the collective empathy felt by many. He organized a flower delivery for Tumbler Ridge, which quickly turned into a community effort as strangers joined in. “We just thought it would be a nice gesture to show Tumbler Ridge that people care,” Ember stated.
Additionally, GoFundMe campaigns for the victims have collectively raised over $1 million, further showcasing the widespread support for Tumbler Ridge. Trueit confirmed that she will continue providing free meals as long as necessary, including for the first day back for students and staff at Tumbler Ridge Secondary.
Support is also coming from afar, with a school in Vancouver offering to cover the cost of meals for the community. “I was a little shy on that one. I was like, ‘I don’t know if we can handle that,'” Trueit recalled. However, with the help of Northern Health, plans came together to make it possible.
While the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, the kindness of strangers provides a glimmer of hope. “It definitely makes you look at the positive in the world,” Trueit reflected, underscoring the resilience and unity of Tumbler Ridge.
