U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran Announces $425,000 for BCC Programs

URGENT UPDATE: U.S. Senator Jerry Moran has just announced a significant boost for Barton Community College, unveiling $425,000 in federal funding aimed at enhancing the college’s commercial driver’s license (CDL) and agricultural mechanics programs. The announcement occurred at the Ag and Transportation Complex in Great Bend, Kansas, which opened in 2024.

During his visit, Moran stated, “I’m in Great Bend today on the Barton Community College campus to announce that Congress passed legislation, approved by the House and Senate and signed by the president, that includes designated spending for workforce training at Barton Community College.” This funding is set to strengthen technical training for students while directly addressing workforce needs in Barton County.

Mike Johnson, chairman of the Barton Community College Board of Trustees, emphasized the critical role community colleges play in the state’s workforce development. “An unknown fact for many people is that Kansas’ community college system currently provides more than 70% of all technical training in the state,” Johnson remarked. “This federal funding was instrumental in allowing Barton to purchase the critical equipment needed for this facility we’re standing in today.”

The federal funding will enable the college to acquire essential equipment for its programs, ensuring students are job-ready when they enter the workforce. Barton Community College President Marcus Garstecki highlighted the broader impact of the investment, noting, “This building and this facility have increased capacity and provided additional opportunities to train individuals for our local workforce.”

Garstecki added, “It’s great news for Barton Community College. But as I like to say, all boats rise in high tides. If it’s good for Barton Community College, it’s good for Barton County and all the communities we serve.” This funding marks a pivotal moment for the college, enhancing its ability to prepare students for high-demand careers in key sectors like agriculture.

The announcement comes at a crucial time as communities across the nation seek to bolster workforce training programs. With the new funding, BCC is better positioned to meet local employers’ demands for skilled labor, thereby fostering economic growth in the region.

As the local economy continues to evolve, the college’s investment in advanced training facilities will play a crucial role in shaping the future workforce. Watch for further developments on how this funding will specifically impact students and local job markets.
