UPDATE: The U.S. Ski Team is gearing up for the highly anticipated Stifel Copper Cup, with the first race—a super-G—set to kick off at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Copper Mountain. Members of the team shared their excitement and insights during a press conference last night, emphasizing the significance of this event.
The four-day competition will feature critical races: a giant slalom on Friday, followed by women’s giant slalom and slalom events on Saturday and Sunday. These races are crucial as athletes strive to secure points and momentum ahead of the Olympic season.
Bryce Bennett, a towering 6-foot-7 downhill specialist, reflected on the importance of team dynamics and leadership. “Our entire team kind of fell apart after the Sun Valley World Cup Finals… Johno McBride’s quiet leadership allows us to take control of our careers,” Bennett stated. His past achievements include three career podiums, with two wins at Val Gardena, Italy.
Meanwhile, Jared Goldberg, a two-time Olympian, aims to build on his impressive second-place finish in super-G last year. “That was a sweet day… this year I’m focusing on finding hundredths instead of seconds,” he said, underscoring his competitive mindset as he prepares for the upcoming races.
Olympic silver medalist Ryan Cochran-Siegle emphasized his evolution in the sport, stating, “I’ve transitioned more into the downhill discipline… I feel like I’m making good movements when I’m skiing.” His insights highlight the challenges athletes face on race day, particularly with the unique course at Copper.
Alumnus River Radamus expressed his joy in inspiring the next generation of skiers. “When I was a kid, I chased around Ted Ligety and Bode Miller… it’s important to grow the fan base of our sport,” Radamus shared, reflecting on his early aspirations.
Emerging athlete Bridger Gile, who scored his first World Cup points last year, is keen on making a mark this season. “I’m focusing on getting good results in World Cups… hopefully, that leads to making the Olympic team,” he noted, indicating the competitive spirit among the younger skiers.
Finally, Kyle Negomir expressed the significance of competing at Copper, a venue familiar to the U.S. team. “It’s super special to have a World Cup here… we all know this hill like the back of our hands,” he remarked.
As the Stifel Copper Cup approaches, all eyes will be on the U.S. Ski Team as they aim for podium finishes and set the tone for the upcoming Olympic year. Fans are eagerly anticipating the action, with the first race just hours away. Stay tuned for live updates and results!
