URGENT UPDATE: The remaining two hikers tragically found dead on Mt. Baldy have been officially identified as Juan Sarat Lopez, 37, and Bayron Pedro Ramos Garcia, 36. Both men were Guatemalan nationals residing in Los Angeles, as confirmed by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department on Saturday, January 3.
Authorities believe Lopez and Ramos Garcia fell from the Devil’s Backbone Trail and succumbed to their injuries on the same day they were discovered, December 29, 2023. This incident adds to the heartbreak following the earlier identification of Marcus Alexander Muench Casanova, a 19-year-old college freshman from Seal Beach, who also fell approximately 500 feet from the treacherous trail.
The search and rescue operation commenced around 11:30 a.m. on December 29, triggered by reports of an injured hiker near the Devil’s Backbone. The hiker, later identified as Casanova, fell while hiking and was accompanied by a friend who went to seek cell phone service. This companion provided crucial GPS coordinates to rescuers.
Rescue teams, including ground units and sheriff’s air crews, responded swiftly. During aerial searches, deputies identified Casanova and the two other victims. However, strong winds hindered helicopter operations, preventing immediate rescue efforts. As night fell, an air medic was lowered to the site with assistance from a Los Angeles County helicopter, confirming the tragic deaths of all three men.
The community is mourning the loss of these three young lives, and investigations are ongoing to determine the precise circumstances surrounding their deaths. Authorities emphasize the dangers of the steep hiking trails, which can lead to fatal accidents.
What’s Next: As the investigation continues, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is urging hikers to exercise caution when navigating these challenging terrains. Further updates are anticipated as officials analyze the situation and assess safety measures for future hikers.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with outdoor activities, especially in mountainous regions. The heartfelt condolences of the community are extended to the families of Lopez, Ramos Garcia, and Casanova during this difficult time.
