Upper Darby Lt. Lania Stevens Receives Governor’s Keystone Award

UPDATE: Upper Darby Police Lieutenant Lania Stevens was honored today with the prestigious Governor’s Keystone Award, recognizing her significant contributions to the community. The ceremony took place at the newly refurbished Governor’s Mansion in Harrisburg, PA, just months after an arson attack on the historic building in April 2023.

Governor Josh Shapiro presented the award, highlighting Stevens as a beacon of hope and inspiration in Pennsylvania. “You’re the people who caught our eye along the way … and are making a real difference,” Shapiro stated. This award is given to individuals who demonstrate exceptional dedication to improving the lives of others in their communities.

Stevens is the first Black female lieutenant in the history of the Upper Darby Police Department and has also served as its first Black female sergeant. She is the vice president of the Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County and mentors local youth through the department’s Teens and Police Service (TAPS) Program. “Community engagement is at the heart of her work,” said former Philadelphia 76ers broadcaster Marc Zumoff, who emceed the event.

Upper Darby Mayor Ed Brown expressed pride in Stevens’ recognition, stating it is a rare honor only awarded to 17 recipients statewide. “Lt. Stevens runs our TAPS Academy, aimed at reducing social distance and improving relations between law enforcement and youth,” he noted. Her pioneering achievements serve as a powerful example for aspiring public servants.

Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt praised Stevens’ dedication and professionalism, calling the award a reflection of not only her commitment but also the entire department’s hard work. “I couldn’t be prouder of Lt. Stevens and our entire team,” he stated.

Governor Shapiro emphasized the importance of community in his remarks, referencing the legacy of William Penn and the vision for a place of free expression and justice. “You are the builders who do this every day,” he said, reinforcing the significance of community leaders like Stevens.

As the ceremony concluded, the sense of pride in Upper Darby was palpable. Lt. Lania Stevens’ recognition marks a pivotal moment, not just for her career but also for the community she serves. Her groundbreaking achievements continue to inspire and pave the way for future generations.
