UPDATE: Mourners gathered in Porterville, California on Wednesday for a heart-wrenching candlelight tribute honoring a family of five tragically lost in a fire late Sunday night. Friends and community members lit candles and placed balloons and photos at the site of the devastating fire, where the victims—18-month-old William, 2-year-old Buckley, 3-year-old Charlie, and 5-year-old Ruby—lost their lives.
“I haven’t stopped crying since I found out,” said Helen Sucrese, who cared for the children like her own. She recalled the joy and love they brought into her life. “Every morning, I would get up with the kids, come over, get them ready for the day, and I would get kisses and hugs.”
Sucrese described Ruby as “full of joy,” remembering how the little girl would run to her every morning asking for help getting dressed. “Auntie Helen, can you help me?” she would say, as she embraced the warmth of their bond. Buckley, who had just learned to walk, would greet her with a happy grin, and baby William was “just a joy.”
The community is now in mourning, awaiting news regarding funeral services for the family. The Porterville Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire, a process that officials say could take weeks. In the meantime, friends of the victims are seeking donations to assist with funeral expenses, directing contributions to the Porterville Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
As the community comes together in grief, Sucrese holds onto the cherished memories, stating, “It was just some of the best memories of my life.” The emotional gathering serves as a reminder of the lives lost and the love shared among family and friends, urging those touched by this tragedy to unite in support.
