Urgent Housing Aid: Saugus, Swampscott Secure $688K for Upgrades

UPDATE: The Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities has just announced a significant boost for public housing in Massachusetts, allocating a total of $688,706.82 for vital upgrades in Saugus and Swampscott. This funding is part of the Affordable Homes Act, signed by Gov. Maura Healey, and aims to enhance the safety and livability of state-funded housing.

The Saugus Housing Authority will receive $555,492.17 specifically for essential roof replacements. Meanwhile, the Swampscott Housing Authority has been awarded $133,214.65 to renovate kitchens and bathrooms, addressing critical safety concerns in these high-need areas. These projects are expected to significantly improve living conditions for residents.

State Senator Brendan Crighton emphasized the urgency of these investments, stating, “Investing in our public housing authorities is crucial to ensuring their buildings are safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient.” He expressed pride in the funding allocation, highlighting the collaboration with the Healey-Driscoll Administration to advocate for public housing authorities throughout the Commonwealth.

Representative Jenny Armini echoed these sentiments, asserting that the upgrades are not merely enhancements but essential measures for community safety. “Outdated and broken appliances, utility connections, and dilapidated cabinets are accidents waiting to happen,” she warned. “Prioritizing these vital living spaces is a matter of community safety.”

For Saugus, Representative Jessica Giannino stressed the importance of this funding for the “longevity and quality of public housing” in her district. She praised the Healey-Driscoll Administration for their responsiveness to community needs, stating, “This funding is essential to upgrading and ensuring the safety of our state-funded public housing buildings.”

Additionally, Representative Donald Wong remarked on the critical nature of maintaining these buildings, saying, “We must protect the well-being of residents who rely on them.”

In Swampscott, Housing Authority Chair Charlie Patsios expressed gratitude for the funding but noted the ongoing need for additional support to assist seniors and other residents. “We’re certainly grateful for the amount we received so far, and while we’re optimistic, we need more funding to help support our seniors and residents,” he said.

The urgency of these developments cannot be overstated. As local authorities confirm the allocation of funds, residents can expect immediate action to enhance their living conditions. The next steps will involve the initiation of construction and renovation projects, aimed at improving the safety and quality of life for those living in state-funded housing across Saugus and Swampscott.
