Urgent MLK Weekend Events at Museum of American Revolution

UPDATE: The Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia is set to host an impactful Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend from January 17 to January 19, 2026, unveiling a profound connection between Dr. King and the Declaration of Independence. This urgent programming coincides with the nation’s preparations for the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration.

During this weekend, visitors will delve into the special exhibition “The Declaration’s Journey,” which highlights the evolving interpretations of this historic document. Notably, the exhibition features significant artifacts linked to Dr. King, including the actual metal prison bench he used while incarcerated in Birmingham in 1963 while drafting his iconic “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” Additionally, attendees can view an early distribution copy of King’s renowned “I Have a Dream” speech, alongside materials from the pivotal March on Washington.

The excitement kicks off on Friday, January 16, 2026, with “AmRev Presents: The Declaration’s Journey in Concert” from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. This unique concert combines music and storytelling to trace the history of leadership and civil rights movements in America. Tickets for the concert also grant access to the special exhibition and include a reception.

Throughout the MLK Weekend, the museum will offer a variety of engaging activities aimed at connecting the Revolutionary era with contemporary struggles for freedom and equality. Highlights include a rare opportunity to view Lemuel Haynes’ 1776 anti-slavery essay, “Liberty Further Extended,” and daily talks exploring the transformative power of words in social movements.

Visitors can also enjoy a theatrical performance about Elizabeth Freeman, a formerly enslaved woman who successfully sued for her freedom. Educator-led gallery talks will provide insights into the experiences of people of African descent, bridging the Revolutionary period and the Civil Rights Movement. Family-friendly activities will engage all ages in themes of protest, poetry, and civic action.

For those interested in a deeper exploration, a guided “Black Voices of the Revolution” gallery tour will be available on Saturday and Sunday at noon for an additional fee. All MLK Weekend activities are included with regular museum admission, which is open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM. Children aged 5 and under can enter for free, and all tickets are valid for two consecutive days.
