Urgent: Queens Police Shoot Man Armed with Box Cutter at 12:25 AM

URGENT UPDATE: In a shocking incident early Sunday morning, police officers in Queens shot and killed a 29-year-old man who allegedly charged at them wielding a box cutter. The confrontation occurred at approximately 12:25 a.m. on December 21, 2023, at 1170 Nameoke St. in Far Rockaway, following a 911 call regarding a domestic dispute.

According to NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera, officers from the 101st Precinct were dispatched to the scene after reports of a father having an altercation with his son. Upon arrival, officers met with the father and mother and proceeded to enter the apartment to locate the unnamed son. However, he was not found inside.

As the officers and parents exited the apartment, the son emerged in the hallway, brandishing a box cutter. “The officers gave multiple verbal commands to the male to drop the weapon as they attempted to deescalate the situation,” Chief Rivera said. Unfortunately, the man did not comply.

In a sudden escalation, the father retreated behind the officers as the son charged at them. One officer discharged a Taser, while another opened fire, striking the suspect. Despite immediate CPR administered by the officers, the man was pronounced dead upon arrival at Jamaica Hospital.

The incident has prompted a response from the NYPD Force Investigation Division, which is currently examining the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. Chief Rivera emphasized the daily dangers police officers face, stating, “This incident once again demonstrates how a routine call can quickly escalate into an extremely dangerous situation.”

Both responding officers were evaluated at a local hospital but reported no injuries. The community is left grappling with the emotional impact of this deadly encounter, highlighting ongoing concerns about police interactions in high-stress environments.

As investigations continue, residents are urged to stay informed about developments related to this incident. The NYPD is committed to transparency as they work to understand what led to this tragic outcome.
