UPDATE: The Philadelphia region is bracing for severe winter weather as snow, sleet, and ice are set to hit on Friday, January 5, 2024. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory effective from 1 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday, warning residents to prepare for hazardous road conditions.
The forecast indicates that snow will begin to develop between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., with some areas transitioning to sleet. Philadelphia and its northwest suburbs, including parts of the Lehigh Valley, are expected to receive between 1-3 inches of snow, with the city itself likely seeing closer to 1 inch. Drivers should anticipate slippery roads, particularly during the evening commute.
In South Jersey, particularly in western Monmouth, Middlesex, and Somerset counties, Winter Storm Warnings will be in effect for the same timeframe, with forecasts predicting up to 3-5 inches of snow. This inclement weather is expected to disrupt travel and daily activities, making it critical for residents to stay updated and exercise caution.
Additionally, Philadelphia has declared a Code Blue due to frigid temperatures nearing 20 degrees Fahrenheit. This declaration, in effect through 11 a.m. Saturday, triggers emergency measures to protect those experiencing homelessness. City officials will provide 24-hour outreach and transport unhoused individuals to safe indoor shelters, along with opening all available beds in the emergency housing network.
Residents are encouraged to assist by reporting any individuals in need to the city’s Homeless Outreach hotline at 215-232-1984.
As the storm approaches, it’s crucial for everyone in the affected areas to stay informed and take necessary precautions. Prepare for challenging conditions and stay safe during this winter weather event.
Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops.
