Valencia Named in Historic Ceremony: A New Era Begins

UPDATE: A historic naming ceremony for the new community of Valencia took place today, October 18, 1965, attracting over 700 attendees at the Valencia Golf Club. The event marks a significant moment in Santa Clarita’s development, promising a vibrant future for residents.
This ceremony, led by Scott Newhall, publisher of The Signal, celebrates the community’s resemblance to Valencia, Spain. Newhall highlighted a forgotten connection: the first European to enter the Santa Clarita Valley, Gaspar de Portola, hailed from Valencia. The vision for Valencia includes a network of lakes, canals, and pedestrian-friendly spaces, aiming to redefine suburban living.
Authorities revealed that the original plans for Valencia were ambitious, featuring exquisite tile murals on freeway underpasses and a community designed for shared experiences rather than car dependency. The idea was to foster interaction in parks and shopping areas, creating a unique urban landscape.
In a related historical context, the name “Lebec” also surfaced during the event, tracing back to Peter LeBeck, a trapper killed by a bear in 1837. Historian Bonnie Ketter/Kane noted that General Edward Fitzgerald Beale proposed the name “Lebecque” during an 1888 speech, linking the town’s history to its modern identity.
The day also commemorated the 80 million tickets sold in the inaugural month of the California Lottery, reflecting a surge in community engagement. Notably, Tex Williams, a celebrated figure in the local music scene, was remembered for his contributions to Santa Clarita culture.
Local historian John Boston expressed excitement about the ongoing evolution of Valencia, stating, “This is just the beginning. The community will grow and thrive, embodying our rich history while paving the way for future generations.”
As Valencia embarks on this new chapter, residents and officials alike anticipate the positive impact this development will have on community life. Keep an eye on Valencia as it evolves; this is a story just beginning to unfold.
