Valley Santa Sees Record Gift Requests Amid Urgent Need

UPDATE: Valley Santa officials report an unprecedented surge in gift requests this year, attributing the growing need to the ongoing federal government shutdown and a state budget impasse. Organizers emphasize the urgency of the situation, as demand for holiday gifts reaches alarming levels.

Local attorney Sarah Borland, whose family has spearheaded the Valley Santa program for over 40 years, voiced her concerns during a volunteering event at Boscov’s in Wilkes-Barre on November 7, 2025. “We are very concerned with supply problems. Prices have gone up,” Borland stated, highlighting the challenges faced by the organization as they prepare for the holiday season.

The Valley Santa program, which began as a small initiative in the 1980s, has seen a dramatic increase in requests this year. Borland noted, “That could be an indication that people are getting requests in early or it’s an indication it’s going to be a rough year for people. I do think it’s the latter.”

This year’s program is supported by local sponsors including The Citizens’ Voice, Standard-Speaker, M&T Bank, and others, ensuring that every child in the community receives a present this Christmas. With over 300 volunteers on hand, the organization is committed to bringing joy to families in need. “Children deserve joy. Presents at Christmas aren’t just about presents necessarily. It shows children are seen and loved,” Borland emphasized.

As the community rallies around this cause, residents are encouraged to contribute financially. Donations can be mailed to Valley Santa Inc., P.O. Box 5276, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18711, dropped off at any M&T Bank branch, or made online at valleysanta.org.

The urgency of this year’s campaign cannot be overstated. With rising costs and increasing requests, the Valley Santa program is poised for a record-breaking year, but only with the support of the community. As Borland and her team work tirelessly to ensure no child is left without a gift, the need for donations is more critical than ever.
