UPDATE: Volkswagen has just announced the launch of its highly anticipated T-Roc R, a performance SUV set to revolutionize the compact crossover market. The T-Roc has already made waves in Europe, becoming the fourth best-selling model of the year with 170,931 units sold through October, according to sales data from Dataforce.
Deliveries for the new T-Roc are kicking off this month, but the excitement doesn’t stop there. Volkswagen is teasing the performance-focused T-Roc R, expected to hit the roads in 2027. While details remain under wraps, early images reveal an aggressive design featuring a distinctive Akrapovič quad-exhaust system, hinting at the vehicle’s enhanced performance capabilities.
Key specifications include 20-inch forged wheels and wider tires designed for improved grip, elevating the T-Roc R above its predecessors. Under the hood, the T-Roc R is set to share the powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine with the latest Golf R, delivering an impressive 328 hp and 295 lb-ft (420 Newton-meters) of torque. Notably, this iteration introduces a mild-hybrid setup aimed at boosting efficiency to comply with upcoming Euro 7 regulations.
Although the T-Roc R’s power output will likely mirror that of the Golf R, Volkswagen has focused on optimizing efficiency rather than increasing horsepower. As the automotive landscape shifts towards electrification, the T-Roc R is positioned as a key player in VW’s evolving lineup. However, the six-speed manual transmission will be replaced by a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, standardizing the driving experience across VW’s R models.
The T-Roc R will not be available in the United States, mirroring the decision to withhold the Golf R wagon from the U.S. market. In a strategic move, Volkswagen plans to phase out the Touareg R by 2026, which marks the end of an era for the luxury SUV. Looking forward, a fully electric R model is on the horizon, with VW already hinting at a future powered solely by electric motors.
As Volkswagen continues to innovate and expand its R division, the T-Roc R stands as a testament to the brand’s commitment to performance and sustainability. With customer deliveries commencing this month, automotive enthusiasts are eager to see how this new model will compete in a rapidly changing market. Stay tuned for more updates as Volkswagen gears up for one of its most exciting launches yet.
