UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown, the Westbrook High School football team has secured its first-ever regional title, defeating the two-time champion Kennebunk with a score of 34-27 at a packed Olmstead Field. This historic victory took place on November 3, 2023, with over 2,000 fans in attendance, showcasing the community’s unwavering support.
The Blue Blazes, ranked No. 1, faced off against No. 2 Kennebunk in the Class B South final, emerging victorious in a game that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. “The community came out and they showed out. It’s awesome,” said team captain Dimitri Lubin, who made a significant impact with six catches for 80 yards, including a crucial 18-yard touchdown.
Westbrook, which had a challenging season last year with a 2-6 record and did not make the playoffs, now boasts an impressive 9-1 season. This win propels them into their first state championship game on November 11 at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. “We talked about it a ton last year… adversity creates opportunity. We embrace moments like this,” said head coach Sam Johnson, a 2012 Westbrook grad who has transformed the team’s fortunes since taking over in 2022.
In the face of adversity, the Blue Blazes maintained their focus, despite being considered underdogs against Kennebunk. The Rams finished their season at 8-2, with both losses coming at the hands of Westbrook. Kennebunk’s struggles were evident, as they suffered four turnovers, including three fumbles and an interception on a last-second hail mary attempt.
The defining moment of the match occurred with less than six minutes remaining, as Westbrook led 27-20. After a fumble by Westbrook running back Cole Tanner, Kennebunk’s Jaiden Homa appeared poised to score. However, Westbrook tight end Owen Taylor made a crucial play, stripping the ball and allowing Adrian Anderson to recover, maintaining Westbrook’s momentum.
“We’re going to have to come back to practice on Monday and just start working again for Cony,” said Lubin, anticipating their next opponent. North champion Cony, undefeated at 10-0, has been dominating its competition, defeating Fryeburg Academy 40-7 in the North final.
Despite the loss, Kennebunk coach Keith Noel praised his team’s effort, stating, “Credit to our kids, they didn’t give up… they worked to the very last whistle.”
Quarterback Gio Staples was instrumental in the win, completing 9 of 17 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 77 yards and two scores. The Blue Blazes struck first with a 25-yard run from Andre Hicks III, before Kennebunk equalized with a touchdown run just before halftime.
Westbrook’s resilience shone through as they quickly answered back, culminating in a 72-yard drive finished by Staples’ 3-yard scramble for a touchdown. The back-and-forth battle continued as both teams exchanged scores, but Westbrook consistently found ways to respond, demonstrating their determination.
As the Blue Blazes prepare for their upcoming state championship game, their community’s support will undoubtedly play a crucial role in their quest for victory. The excitement surrounding this team is palpable, and fans are eager to witness history in the making as Westbrook continues its remarkable journey.
