Yolo County Targets Human Trafficking with Urgent Community Events

UPDATE: Empower Yolo is taking decisive action against human trafficking in Yolo County with a series of urgent community events aimed at raising awareness and supporting survivors. This initiative comes as human trafficking remains a pressing issue, impacting individuals throughout both urban and rural areas in the county.

Human trafficking is often invisible, hiding in plain sight within communities like Yolo. Vulnerabilities such as agricultural labor, seasonal employment, and housing instability create fertile ground for exploitation. Young people, especially those in crisis, are particularly at risk, targeted by traffickers who prey on their emotional and basic needs.

Last year alone, Empower Yolo supported 35 survivors of human trafficking, with cases including both sex and labor trafficking. One poignant example is a 15-year-old survivor who experienced severe exploitation after running away from home. Empower Yolo’s dedicated Anti-Trafficking Advocate, Jen Vasquez, provided critical emotional support, helping her navigate trauma while emphasizing her autonomy and choices.

In recognition of Anti-Trafficking Awareness Month, two key events are scheduled:
– On January 7, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., community members can attend “Protecting Our Kids: One Click at a Time” at the Sacramento City College Davis Center. This presentation focuses on online safety and prevention strategies.
– Later, on January 28, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., a trafficking awareness forum will bring together advocates, survivors, and trusted community leaders to discuss local trafficking dynamics.

Mat Jameson, an investigator from the Yolo County District Attorney’s office, emphasizes the importance of these events, stating, “Participants will learn to recognize the signs of trafficking, identify red flags, and understand how to support friends or family who may be impacted.”

These forums will also provide attendees with local resources and volunteering opportunities to combat trafficking in Yolo County. “This reflects the strength of our community when we unite for a shared purpose,” says Sonia Jimenez, Associate Director of Empower Yolo.

On January 11, the community is invited to participate in Wear Blue Day to show support for human trafficking awareness. Participants are encouraged to post photos using #WearBlueDay and tag @empower_yolo.

Empower Yolo is also calling for donations of new toiletries, gift cards, and comfort items for survivors, which will be included in comfort backpacks. Donations can be dropped off at various locations, including 175 Walnut St. in Woodland and 441 D St. in Davis, or brought to the January 28 event.

For those in need of immediate support, Empower Yolo offers a 24-hour crisis line at 530-662-1133. All services provided are free, safe, and confidential.

As Yolo County embarks on this crucial mission, community engagement will be key to eradicating human trafficking and supporting survivors. Stay informed and involved by following Empower Yolo on social media channels and participating in these pivotal events.
