UPDATE: In a powerful display of unity, an Israeli boxing team comprising young Jewish and Muslim athletes just competed against British boxers at the “Gloves and Doves” event, held at the JW3 cultural centre in London. This event, which took place last week, aims to challenge misconceptions about Israel, emphasizing that it is a multicultural society where individuals of all backgrounds fight together for peace.
The Israeli team included two Muslims and four Jews, all determined to showcase the spirit of coexistence. With Israeli flags adorning the venue and messages of “fight for peace” displayed in English, Arabic, and Hebrew, the atmosphere was charged with hope and camaraderie. Boxer Tony Milch, founder of Gloves and Doves, stated, “We are here for peace, we are here for unity,” highlighting the initiative’s goal to promote understanding among diverse communities.
This event marks the second year young Israeli boxers have traveled to the UK for this purpose. Last year, it was hosted in Camden, but the mission remains the same: to bring together youth from different backgrounds while demonstrating that Israel is a place of inclusivity. “Many who attend don’t even know there are Arabs in Israel,” Milch noted, emphasizing the importance of building relationships and raising awareness.
The live-streamed event received backing from the World Boxing Council (WBC), underscoring its significance in the boxing world. Milch expressed the transformative power of the sport, stating, “The respect you have for yourself once you’ve been in the ring brings you together in a powerful way.”
Among the notable attendees was undefeated professional boxer Alireza Ghadiri, who presented the Alexander Mashkevitch Award for boxer of the night to Mahmoud Majid, a 13-year-old Arab Israeli from Makr. Majid impressed the audience with his skills, marking him as a rising star in the boxing community.
The atmosphere was described as “very positive” by British competitor Charles Whitewood, who won his bout against an Israeli opponent. “We traded punches instead of words, which brought us closer than words ever could,” he remarked, emphasizing the bonds formed through the sport.
As this initiative continues to grow, the Gloves and Doves team is committed to changing perceptions and fostering dialogue. The event serves not only as a sporting competition but as a vital platform for cultural exchange and understanding.
