Bethlehem Revives Christmas Spirit with Festivities Starting Dec. 6

Christmas celebrations will return to the historic city of Bethlehem in the West Bank after a two-year hiatus caused by the war in Gaza. Mayor Maher Canawati announced that festivities will commence on December 6, 2023, with a traditional lighting of the Christmas tree in the well-known Manger Square.

In a heartfelt video shared on social media, Mayor Canawati expressed his joy, stating, “From the heart of Bethlehem, the birthplace of Christ, the city of peace — once again, we ignite the flame of hope and raise our prayers for peace.” He emphasized the importance of unity during the holiday season, urging everyone to “celebrate together the message of Christmas.”

Manger Square holds significant historical importance as it is named for the manger where Jesus was laid after his birth, making it a focal point for pilgrims and tourists alike. The return of Christmas celebrations is a poignant reminder of resilience in the face of adversity.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Robert Jeffress, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, expressed optimism about the festivities. He remarked, “It is encouraging to see the ‘little town of Bethlehem’ once again celebrating the birth of the most important person in history.” While acknowledging the temporary peace in the region, he cautioned, “The Bible teaches there will be no lasting peace in the Middle East until the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ, returns to Earth to establish his kingdom.”

The festive atmosphere is expected to attract thousands of visitors from around the globe, as it has in previous years. In 2019, the mayor at the time, Anton Salman, projected an influx of 1.4 million visitors for the Christmas season. He noted the increasing appeal of the celebrations, saying, “I have celebrated Christmas for three seasons and each season, [celebrations] are more organized and more attractive for the local community and for tourists.”

The Church of the Nativity, which stands over the grotto traditionally recognized as the birthplace of Jesus, was renovated in 2019, further enhancing its significance as a pilgrimage destination.

As Christmas approaches, the return of these celebrations in Bethlehem not only marks a revival of holiday cheer but also serves as a beacon of hope for peace in a region long affected by conflict. With the lighting of the Christmas tree and the expected influx of pilgrims, the city aims to spread a message of goodwill and unity during this festive season.
