The Atlanta Falcons have announced the retention of defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich as part of the coaching staff under new head coach Kevin Stefanski. This decision comes just two days after Stefanski was appointed to replace Raheem Morris, who was dismissed following an 8-9 season.
Owner Arthur Blank publicly endorsed Ulbrich’s continuation. Despite the firing of Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot, Blank indicated he would recommend, but not require, the new coach to keep the defensive coordinator. Ulbrich earned this support after a season marked by significant defensive improvements, particularly in the pass rush.
During Ulbrich’s first season as defensive coordinator, the Falcons set a franchise record with 57 sacks. This was a notable turnaround from the previous year, where the team finished second to last in the league with only 31 sacks. The defensive line’s successes were largely attributed to rookie first-round picks James Pearce Jr. and Jalon Walker, alongside second-year player Brandon Dorlus.
Defensive Highlights and Player Achievements
Pearce stood out in 2025, finishing the season with 10.5 sacks, the highest tally for a Falcons player since Vic Beasley recorded 15.5 in 2016. Additionally, the 2025 draft class featured safety Xavier Watts, who made an impact with five interceptions. Jessie Bates III, another safety, was one of four Falcons players named to the All-Pro team in 2025.
In the realm of offensive achievements, Bijan Robinson was recognized as a first-team running back and a second-team all-purpose player. Tight end Kyle Pitts Sr., right guard Chris Lindstrom, and Bates also received second-team honors, showcasing the overall talent within the team.
Stefanski’s hiring marks the first major decision for the Falcons following his appointment on January 5, 2025. He is expected to bring in a new offensive coordinator and special teams coach to complement the existing defensive structure. The search for a new general manager continues under newly appointed president of football operations Matt Ryan, the former long-time quarterback for the Falcons.
Stefanski previously spent six seasons with the Cleveland Browns, where he earned the AP Coach of the Year award twice and recorded a 45-56 overall record. His departure from the Browns followed a disappointing 5-12 finish in the 2024 season, which set the stage for his new role in Atlanta.
The decision to retain Ulbrich emphasizes the Falcons’ commitment to maintaining a strong defensive unit as they transition into a new era under Stefanski’s leadership.
