A devastating fire at a nightclub in Goa, India, has resulted in the deaths of at least 25 individuals, including several tourists. The incident occurred just after midnight on December 3, 2023, in Arpora, a well-known party destination in North Goa. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed that most of the deceased were kitchen workers, alongside three to four tourists who were present at the venue.
According to the Press Trust of India, the fire ignited following a gas cylinder explosion. Emergency services managed to extinguish the blaze, but not before it claimed numerous lives. Six individuals sustained injuries, but they are reported to be in stable condition.
Witnesses indicated that approximately 100 people were on the dance floor when the fire erupted. In the ensuing panic, many rushed to the kitchen below and became trapped alongside the club’s staff. The nightclub’s location along the Arpora river backwaters features a narrow entrance, which hampered the response of fire brigades. Reports indicate that firefighters had to park their vehicles about 400 meters from the club, causing delays in their response efforts.
Regulatory Concerns and Government Response
Local council member Roshan Redkar revealed that authorities had previously issued a demolition notice for the nightclub due to its lack of a construction permit. However, this order was later rescinded by higher officials. In light of the tragedy, the state government has initiated an inquiry to ascertain the exact cause of the fire and to evaluate whether fire safety protocols and building regulations were adhered to.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences via social media, describing the incident as “deeply saddening.” He stated that the state government is providing all possible assistance to those affected and has reached out to Chief Minister Sawant regarding the situation.
Accidents involving gas cylinders are not uncommon in India and often lead to significant casualties.
