Grand Forks Business Owner Champions Community Employment Program

A Grand Forks business owner is advocating for a new initiative aimed at helping individuals overcome employment barriers. The program, called the Ready4Work Program, was launched by Love In Action, a local nonprofit organization, in December 2023. Preston Dahl, owner of Dahl House Properties, believes that the initiative has the potential to benefit not only individuals seeking work but the community as a whole.

Dahl’s involvement with the program stems from his personal connection to Doris Lebby, the board president of Love In Action, as well as his deep-rooted religious beliefs. He described the program as being akin to a ministry, stating, “In some ways, it’s a ministry. They need someone to believe in them and give them a second chance.” Dahl’s commitment to seeing others succeed drives his support for the program, which he believes can make a significant impact in addressing the skilled labor shortage he frequently encounters.

In the construction industry, Dahl often hires subcontractors for housing renovations but faces challenges in finding suitable candidates. He attributes this to a perception among some individuals that their past struggles will prevent them from being given another chance. “Some people just need a second chance, while others require more help developing soft skills,” he noted. For many, the belief that they won’t be offered opportunities can be discouraging, leading them to avoid even attempting to find work.

Dahl has previously taken steps to assist individuals in similar situations to those targeted by the Ready4Work Program. He acknowledges that while offering help can lead to setbacks, it also creates opportunities for building strong relationships and loyalty. “It requires a fair amount of patience and compassion,” he added.

Addressing Employment Barriers

The executive director of Love In Action, Everett C. Jones Sr., emphasized the organization’s commitment to creating programs that address community needs. He pointed out that many people question why individuals do not secure employment without considering the multitude of obstacles they face. These can include a lack of reliable transportation, essential documents like birth certificates or Social Security cards, and various health-related challenges.

Jones stated, “We are trying to focus on solutions, because the problems themselves are well known.” He believes that many people want to work but may require extra support or guidance to navigate their circumstances. The Ready4Work Program aims to provide this assistance by ensuring participants have the necessary resources, such as reliable transportation, to maintain their employment.

One innovative aspect of the program is its approach to reducing the perceived risks for employers. Love In Action plans to cover costs such as insurance, which allows employers to focus solely on wage expenses. This initiative aims to encourage more businesses to participate and provide opportunities for individuals seeking work.

Jones highlighted that the program is not limited to those experiencing homelessness but is open to anyone facing employment challenges. “Our doors will be open to accept applications and get them assigned,” he stated, encouraging business owners with short-term or ongoing labor needs to reach out for collaboration.

Community Engagement and Support

As the Ready4Work Program gains momentum, Dahl and Jones are appealing for community support in various forms. Business owners interested in participating can contact Jones directly at [email protected] or via phone at (701) 330-8775. They also welcome financial contributions to help fund program coordination, compliance, and sustainability.

“We are grateful for the donors that we have, and we are excited for anyone who wants to be a part of this specific transition with us as we go forward, filling in these gaps,” Jones added.

The Ready4Work Program represents a proactive approach to addressing employment barriers in Grand Forks, aiming to empower individuals and strengthen the community through meaningful work opportunities.
