Harry Styles has shared the unexpected circumstances that led him to attend the conclave election for the new pope at the Vatican. Fans first spotted the singer in Saint Peter’s Square during the event, which took place in May 2025, shortly after the death of Pope Francis in April. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed his attendance at the historic moment, which has since sparked curiosity among his followers.
In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1, Styles recounted how he stumbled upon the significant occasion. He explained, “I was getting a haircut in Rome. I heard all these people start shouting, ‘Habemus papam! Habemus papam!’ People are just running down the street.” The singer described how the barber paused his work to share the news of the new pope, which prompted Styles to take action. “So then he finished up, and I was like, ‘I’m a five-minute walk from there,’ so I walked over there. It was wild.”
The conclave resulted in the election of the Catholic Church’s first U.S. pope, Robert Prevost, a Chicago-born missionary, who became the 267th pontiff. His election followed a period of mourning for Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88.
Styles has been relatively low-key since the conclusion of his two-year-long Love On Tour in 2023. During the past year, he has engaged in various activities, including participating in a marathon in Tokyo in March and joining a running club in London last April. His time away from the spotlight appears to be coming to an end, as he prepares for a musical comeback.
In early January, it was announced that Styles would release his fourth solo album, titled Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, on March 6, 2025. Additionally, he is set to embark on his Together, Together tour, beginning on May 16 in Amsterdam and concluding on December 13 in Sydney, Australia.
As Styles gears up for this new chapter in his career, his spontaneous attendance at a momentous event in the Catholic Church showcases his ability to connect with significant cultural happenings, even when least expected.
