Hostage Rescued in Officer-Involved Shooting in Grand Forks

A hostage situation in Grand Forks concluded with the successful rescue of a man on December 5, 2023, when police officers intervened and shot a woman who posed a threat. The incident took place in the 1400 block of 10th Avenue North and involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office and the Grand Forks Police Department.

According to a report from the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office, the situation began when a woman called dispatch, claiming she was holding a man hostage in an apartment. Officers responded swiftly, locating the apartment unit within the building and assessing the urgency of the situation.

Officers Respond to Hostage Situation

The report indicated that officers faced exigent circumstances, necessitating immediate entry into the apartment to protect the hostage. Inside the unit, officers found the hostage and the suspect. They perceived a clear threat, prompting a deputy to discharge his firearm multiple times at the suspect.

The hostage was unharmed during the confrontation, and emergency services were called to the scene. The suspect, however, sustained multiple injuries and was transported via ambulance to Altru Hospital for medical treatment. Fortunately, no officers were injured in the incident.

Investigation Underway

Following protocol, the deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office, the Grand Forks Police Department, and the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation are all involved in the ongoing inquiry.
