Mexican Mayor Gunned Down During Day of the Dead Celebrations

A Mexican mayor who vocally opposed drug cartels was fatally shot on October 28, 2023, during public celebrations for the Day of the Dead in his hometown of Uruapan, Michoacán. Carlos Manzo, 40, was attacked by two gunmen in front of supporters in the city’s central square, marking a tragic incident amid festivities meant to honor deceased loved ones.

President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the assassination, stating, “I condemn in the strongest possible terms the vile assassination of the mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo.” She expressed her condolences to his family and the Uruapan community, emphasizing the profound loss felt across Mexico. David Saucedo, a security consultant, characterized the attack as a “kamikaze attack,” highlighting the boldness of the assailants.

Manzo rose to prominence as a fierce critic of the violent drug trafficking organizations that have plagued Mexico for decades. He had recently called for “brute force” against these groups, acknowledging the risks of his stance. “I don’t want to be just another murdered mayor,” he stated in a poignant remark last month. “But it is important not to let fear control us.” His words underscored the perilous nature of political life in regions plagued by cartel violence.

The assassination has sparked significant outrage, resonating within both Mexican and American political circles. Christopher Landau, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State and former ambassador to Mexico, extended his sympathies through social media. He stated, “On this All Souls’ Day, my thoughts are with the family and friends of Carlos Manzo, mayor of Uruapan, Michoacán, Mexico.” He also reiterated the U.S. commitment to enhancing security cooperation with Mexico to combat organized crime effectively.

Manzo, who began his political journey with Sheinbaum’s Morena Party, later declared himself an independent. He was critical of former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s “hugs not bullets” strategy, advocating instead for a more aggressive approach to combat narcotraffickers. Elected to office last year, he frequently called upon Sheinbaum to adopt a firmer stance against the cartels.

Despite being accompanied by national guard troops during the event, Manzo could not be saved. His assassination raises serious concerns about the safety of public officials in Mexico and highlights the ongoing challenge of addressing organized crime in the country. As the investigation unfolds, many are left to ponder the implications of such violence on political leadership and public safety in Mexico.
