Overnight Lane Closures Begin for Long-Term I-95 Traffic Shift

Drivers on southbound Interstate 95 in Philadelphia are advised to prepare for overnight lane closures next week, marking the beginning of a long-term traffic shift associated with vital bridge repair work. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has scheduled these closures from January 13 to January 16, 2024, as crews install barriers and implement a new traffic pattern between Spruce Street and Packer Avenue.

Each night, a single lane will close from 21:00 to 00:00, followed by a double lane closure from 00:00 to 05:00. PennDOT anticipates significant delays during these hours, and all activities are subject to weather conditions. By 05:00 on January 17, the new long-term traffic configuration is expected to be operational.

Details of the Bridge Repair Project

This traffic shift is part of a broader $37.4 million federally funded initiative aimed at addressing critical repairs to interstate bridges. The project focuses on enhancing safety, mobility, and structural integrity. Work will include repairs to deteriorated bridge decks, steel superstructure components, and prestressed concrete beams, along with the replacement of expansion joints and deck seals.

Additional tasks will cover maintenance of bridge railings, guiderails, and steel sign supports, as well as cleaning and repainting 11 overhead steel sign structures. Existing roadway lighting will be upgraded to energy-efficient LED luminaires, further improving conditions for motorists.

IEW Construction Group, Inc., based in Hamilton, New Jersey, has been contracted to manage the project. With the implementation of these overnight closures leading to a months-long traffic shift, motorists are encouraged to plan their routes accordingly and remain informed about changing conditions.
