Verizon Launches Affordable 5G Fixed Wireless Access for Consumers
Verizon has introduced a more affordable version of its 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) service, designed specifically for budget-conscious consumers with light internet usage. This new offering, called Verizon Home Internet Lite (VHI), targets households located outside the reach of its Fios broadband network.
The VHI service seeks to provide a solution for customers who have historically relied on slower broadband technologies, such as DSL or satellite. It is tailored for users with modest everyday internet needs. A representative from Verizon informed Mobile World Live that VHI leverages the C-Band spectrum when the 5G network is unavailable.
Customers can access the service for $25 per month if bundled with an existing mobile plan, or pay $35 for a standalone subscription. The plan is capped at a download speed of 25 Mb/s, with typical performance ranging between 10 Mb/s and 25 Mb/s. Once users exceed 15 GB of data within a billing cycle, speeds are throttled to a maximum of 10 Mb/s, though unlimited data remains available for the remainder of the month. Additionally, the service includes a free router for self-installation, making it more accessible for users.
In comparison, Verizon’s standard 5G Home Internet plans range from approximately $35 to $75 per month, depending on the selected package and whether customers already have a mobile service.
Verizon has seen significant growth in its FWA customer base, gaining 278,000 new subscribers in the second quarter of 2023, bringing its total to 5.1 million customers. The company’s CEO at the time, Hans Vestberg, expressed confidence that Verizon is on track to meet its goal of having between 8 million and 9 million FWA subscribers by 2028.
Earlier in the month, Verizon announced its acquisition of regional FWA provider Starry for an undisclosed amount. This strategic move aims to expand Verizon’s service offerings to multi-dwelling units, enhancing access for urban customers looking for reliable internet solutions.
As the demand for internet connectivity continues to surge, Verizon’s new Home Internet Lite service represents a significant step towards providing affordable and efficient internet access for a wider range of consumers.
