Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton Shine in Final Game at Beaver Stadium

STATE COLLEGE – In a remarkable showcase of talent and camaraderie, Penn State running backs Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton solidified their status as one of the most successful duos in Nittany Lions history during their final game at Beaver Stadium. On October 14, 2023, the pair played pivotal roles in a decisive 37-10 victory over Nebraska, marking a high point in a season that has been challenging for the team.

The duo arrived at Penn State in 2022, quickly forming a close friendship that extended beyond the field. Their bond has been characterized by shared experiences as roommates, teammates, and workout partners. Allen’s performance on Saturday night saw him break the university’s all-time rushing record, surpassing Evan Royster with a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter, ultimately finishing with 160 yards and two touchdowns. This achievement brought his career total to 3,954 yards.

“I’m just grateful for my team,” Allen expressed after the game. “If we could have been winning the whole season and I didn’t get the record, I’d rather do that. I’m just glad I got an opportunity to do this.”

Singleton also made his mark by tying Saquon Barkley’s school record for total touchdowns, scoring two during the game. He contributed 95 all-purpose yards, with 44 yards from seven carries and 51 yards on three receptions. With a career total of 5,403 yards, Singleton is just 135 yards shy of breaking Barkley’s overall record.

“It’s special because it went back to all the winter workouts and things like that,” Allen said of their journey together. “Pushing each other and feeding off each other. He’s my brother, and we are just tight.”

Their friendship has been a source of strength, particularly after the team transitioned to interim head coach Terry Smith on October 12, 2023. Singleton has embraced a secondary role behind Allen without hesitation, emphasizing the mutual support they share. “There’s no downside to our friendship,” Singleton remarked. “We’re happy for each other. When he’s on the field doing good or I’m on the field doing good, we support each other.”

Both players have established themselves as elite running backs, joining the ranks of nine others at Penn State who have achieved two seasons of over 1,000 yards. This exclusive group includes legends like Ki-Jana Carter and Blair Thomas. If Singleton manages to rush for just 24 yards in their upcoming game against Rutgers, he will finish his career ranked fourth on the all-time rushing list.

“I was confident four years ago, but we had to put the work in,” Singleton said. “It’s unreal. I haven’t taken a moment to think about it. It’s been so fast. Tonight I’m going to sit back and thank God for it.”

Their on-field chemistry was evident as they celebrated each other’s successes throughout the game. Following Allen’s record-breaking run, Singleton was among the first to congratulate him, sharing a heartfelt embrace. Their journey has not only been about personal achievements but also about uplifting each other as they navigated the challenges of college football.

“Just another unbelievable effort by the tandem,” Smith commented after the game. “They’re unselfish and happy for each other. They’ve added physicality, toughness, and dedication to our team.”

As the Nittany Lions conclude a season filled with ups and downs, Allen and Singleton’s accomplishments provide a glimmer of hope for fans. Their remarkable performances have left an indelible mark on the program’s history, reminding everyone of the power of teamwork and friendship in the face of adversity.
