A couple from Massachusetts has defied conventional retirement norms by continuing to run their furniture design company, which they established nearly 50 years ago. Gerhart and Brigitte Klein, the founders of Brigger by Klein Design, have turned their passion for creating functional furniture into a thriving business, demonstrating that retirement can take many forms.
At the age of 92, Gerhart Klein reflects on his journey, which started in the mid-1970s when he struggled to find a chair that met his standards in local furniture stores. This challenge prompted him to begin crafting his own pieces, a decision that would lead to a successful career in furniture design. By the mid-1980s, he had moved into a dedicated manufacturing facility, where he continues to produce his Scandinavian-inspired chairs made from locally sourced materials.
“I make comfortable chairs,” Klein stated, highlighting the essence of his work. His energy and enthusiasm for the craft are evident, and he draws parallels between his perseverance and that of the iconic battery-operated bunny known for its stamina. While launching his furniture business, Klein also worked as a chemical engineer for a local company that eventually became Duracell. In 1985, he made the bold decision to leave corporate life and focus entirely on his furniture venture. “It’s an interesting challenge that is definitely what I like as my retirement job,” he said.
Brigitte Klein, who has been by her husband’s side for over 62 years, plays a crucial role in the company’s operations. The name “Brigger” is a combination of their names—BRIGitte and GERhart—symbolizing their partnership in both life and business. Gerhart credits Brigitte for much of their success, emphasizing her contributions to quality control. “That’s why we’re still together,” he said. “I come up with something, and she helps improve it.”
As the couple approaches their golden years, they show no signs of slowing down. Recently, they have relaunched their website to adapt to the growing trend of online sales, which has become a significant part of their business strategy. This proactive approach reflects their commitment to evolving with the market while staying true to their roots in craftsmanship.
In a world where many retire to leisure, the Kleins exemplify a different path—one of continued creativity, collaboration, and dedication. Their story serves as an inspiration, illustrating how passion and partnership can lead to a fulfilling life, regardless of age.
