Jaxson Dart Cleared from Concussion Protocol, Set to Start Monday

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart has been cleared from concussion protocol and is expected to return to the starting lineup for the upcoming game against the New England Patriots on November 20, 2023. The Giants announced on Thursday that their rookie quarterback will be back under center after missing the last two games due to a concussion sustained in Week 10 against the Chicago Bears.

Dart’s absence was felt as the Giants struggled in their last two outings, losing to the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions with veteran quarterback Jameis Winston taking the snaps. Winston completed 37 of 65 passes for 567 yards, recording two touchdowns and two interceptions during his time as the starter, alongside a rushing and a receiving score.

The Giants currently hold a record of 2-10 and have dropped six consecutive games, effectively eliminating them from playoff contention. As Dart prepares to return, speculation surrounds whether the coaching staff will limit his running plays. This season, the 2025 first-round pick has been evaluated for concussions four times, including during the preseason, raising concerns about his usage in designed quarterback runs. Under former head coach Brian Daboll, Dart led the league in this category, but reporting suggests that interim coach Mike Kafka may adopt a more conservative strategy upon Dart’s return.

The potential shift could mean fewer quarterback keepers at crucial moments, particularly near the goal line, as well as reduced exposure in games that are out of reach. Prior to his injury, Dart showcased his talent by completing 62.7% of his passes for 1,417 yards, along with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions in nine games, seven of which were starts. Additionally, he contributed 317 rushing yards on 57 carries, scoring seven rushing touchdowns.

Injuries continue to pose challenges for the Giants beyond the quarterback position. On Thursday, the team did not hold a practice but provided estimated participation statuses. Dart is projected to be a full participant, while All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence was marked as a projected non-participant due to an aggravated elbow injury. Linebackers Kayvon Thibodeaux and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles were also listed as likely non-participants with their respective shoulder and neck/knee injuries.

As the Giants look to turn their season around, Dart’s return could provide a much-needed spark for the struggling franchise. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the team adapts its strategy with their rookie quarterback back on the field.
