Waburn Dewey Martin, Cold War Veteran and Dedicated Educator, Passes Away at 86
Waburn Dewey Martin, a respected educator and U.S. Army veteran who played a covert role during the early Cold War, died April 26, 2026. His passing marks the loss of a man whose commitment to service, education, and community left a profound legacy stretching from North Dakota to New Mexico.
Born in May 1939 in Streeter, North Dakota, Martin grew up in Bowman, ND. As the second oldest of four siblings, he proudly enlisted in the United States Army, where he specialized as a Russian linguist. During a pivotal moment in history, Martin was stationed in Germany amid the tense construction of the Berlin Wall, monitoring Russian radio transmissions critical to early Cold War intelligence efforts.
His military service paved the way for a life dedicated to education and community support. After marrying his wife, Patricia, in 1963, Martin pursued advanced studies, earning a Master’s degree in Spanish from the University of New Mexico. He began as a high school Spanish teacher before dedicating most of his career to serving as a media specialist with the Mescalero and Tularosa Public Schools, impacting countless students and educators.
Beyond the classroom, Martin’s talents extended to sound and video production for community events, quietly supporting local traditions such as the Miss Otero County Pageants and the Tularosa Rose Festival. His passion for music — including singing and saxophone — enriched his personal and community life.
Strong Christian faith was central to Martin’s identity. Those who knew him describe a man who lived in humility, kindness, and devotion, reading his Bible daily and modeling an unwavering commitment to others.
Martin was preceded in death by his wife Patricia in 2020, his parents Christian and Lina Martin, and two sisters. He is survived by his daughter, Paula Duntley (Joshua), granddaughters Helena and Carys of New Jersey, and his brother Sherrill Martin of Montana.
Memorial Service Scheduled May 11 at Tularosa United Methodist Church

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Army Emergency Relief (AER) or The God’s Child Project, reflecting his lifelong dedication to service and faith.
Martin’s journey from Cold War surveillance to classroom mentorship highlights a life of steady, impactful service. For readers across the United States, his story is a reminder of the countless veterans transitioning to community leaders and educators who quietly shape generations.
As South Carolina and the nation continue to honor veterans and educators alike, Martin’s life stands as a testament to the power of dedication—whether in foreign service or behind the scenes at local schools and events.
