Beloved Matriarch Catherine “Kay” Waldvogel Passes at 102

BREAKING NEWS: Catherine “Kay” Waldvogel, a cherished matriarch and advocate for individuals with disabilities, has passed away peacefully at the age of 102 on October 22, 2025, surrounded by her family. This profound loss comes just weeks before what would have been her milestone birthday on November 11, leaving a legacy of love and service that touched countless lives.

Born on November 11, 1923, in Johnston City, IL, Kay was the youngest of seven siblings. After completing her education at Johnston City High School in 1941, she moved to Chicago, where she worked alongside her sister Mary until they met their future spouses. Kay married the love of her life, Ken Waldvogel, on February 7, 1948, forming a partnership that lasted an incredible 72 years until Ken’s passing in 2020.

In 1951, the couple relocated to Santa Cruz, CA, establishing the Waldvogel Mushroom Farm in collaboration with Kay’s brother, George Fitz. They welcomed their son, Ken Jr., in 1954. The family settled in Soquel, CA, where they lived for over 60 years, deeply embedding themselves in the community.

Kay was not just a devoted wife and mother; she was a tireless advocate for her youngest daughter, Karen, born with Down’s Syndrome in 1960. Kay devoted over 65 years to caring for Karen, actively participating in the Santa Cruz County Association for the Retarded and Special Olympics. Her commitment to service extended to volunteering at Dominican Hospital for 45 years, where she logged over 9,000 hours.

A lifetime member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Kay contributed significantly to her community by being part of the choir and joining the “3 in 1 Ministry,” where she crafted nearly 1,000 rosaries each year for over 12 years. Her passion for community service also included being a charter member of the Italian Catholic Federation Branch #227 for over 50 years.

Kay’s vibrant spirit shone through her love for travel, especially with the River Rigs RV group and on cruises, with the Panama Canal being a cherished destination. Her passing leaves behind her children: Jeanne Locatelli (Mike) of Woodland, Ken Waldvogel Jr. (Rachael) of Morgan Hill, and Karen Waldvogel of Woodland. She is also survived by grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, continuing her legacy of family love.

A private family celebration of life took place on November 8, 2025, specifically chosen to honor her upcoming birthday and commemorate her remarkable life. Kay will be interred alongside Ken at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA, with the date yet to be determined for 2026.

In accordance with her wishes, the family encourages donations to the Holy Rosary Catholic Church-New Church Fund in Woodland, Canine Companions, or a charity of choice in Kay’s memory.

Kay Waldvogel’s life is a testament to love, resilience, and unwavering support for her family and community. She will be dearly missed, and her impact will resonate through the lives she touched.
