Bissap Baobab to Close Mission Location; New Home Search Underway

BREAKING: Bissap Baobab, the cherished live music venue at Mission and 18th streets, will close its doors for the final time on December 28, 2023. The owner, Marco Senghor, announced this emotional decision on social media, stating, “Baobab is NOT done. We are actively looking for a new home.”

Senghor revealed that maintaining such a large space has become increasingly challenging in today’s environment. “Sustaining such a large space has become too difficult in these times,” he expressed, reflecting the struggles many small businesses face. The venue, known for its vibrant atmosphere and West African cuisine, has served as a cultural hub for nearly 28 years, hosting countless celebrations and community gatherings.

As part of a heartfelt farewell, the owners invite the community to a farewell party on December 20. In the meantime, Bissap Baobab will host “Baobab Flying Night” every Saturday at Muddy Waters Coffee & Lounge on Valencia and 16th streets. Senghor is committed to keeping the spirit of Baobab alive as they search for a new location, stating, “Wherever we land, the drums will follow, and so will the Ceebu Jen.”

Bissap Baobab has not just been a restaurant; it’s a registered legacy business that began in the 1990s from a small catering kitchen. Over the years, it has withstood numerous challenges, including a legal battle that nearly cost Senghor his business. Following a brief sale during his legal troubles in 2018, Senghor reopened Bissap Baobab in a larger venue in 2022, after spending $80,000 on soundproofing to comply with neighborhood regulations.

Despite these efforts, the venue faced ongoing issues with noise complaints and a lengthy struggle to obtain a liquor license, which typically takes about 60 days but for Baobab stretched into a 10-month ordeal. These setbacks impacted customer turnout, pushing Senghor to the brink of closing before finally receiving approval to serve alcohol.

In a poignant message, Senghor shared his hopes for the future: “We are searching, listening, and trusting that the Universe is already whispering our next address.” The community’s support has been vital for Baobab, and Senghor’s commitment to finding a new home reflects a broader narrative of resilience in the face of adversity.

As the closure date approaches, the urgency for community support grows. Bissap Baobab has played a significant role in the cultural landscape of San Francisco, and its temporary closure raises questions about the future of similar venues. The owners are determined to keep the Baobab spirit alive, emphasizing that the community’s support will be crucial in this transition.

Stay tuned for updates on the search for a new location, and mark your calendars for the farewell party on December 20. Bissap Baobab may be closing its doors, but its legacy and community impact will continue as they embark on this new chapter.
