Edgartown Council on Aging Announces Memorial Day Closure and Full May Activity Lineup
The Edgartown Council on Aging (ECOA) is keeping its community engaged this May but will be closed on Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day. Directed by Lyndsay Famariss, the Anchors senior center invites residents to dive into an expansive schedule of weekly activities and special events designed to promote wellness, social connection, and vital community services. All events are based at the Anchors in Edgartown, Massachusetts, and require advance registration by calling 508-627-4368.
Weekly Classes Promote Health, Connection, and Fun
Every Monday, seniors can start with 9:30am seated yoga to improve mobility and balance followed by the popular Edgartown Bowling & Lunch at the Barn Bistro at 11:30am for just $10 for residents. The afternoon features bridge at 12:30pm and a leisurely Katama Walk at 2pm.
Tuesdays bring a shopping shuttle service offering door-to-door rides to local stores including Stop & Shop and the post office, available by advance sign-up. Morning offerings include 9am yoga with Carol Vega, a knitting group at 10am, lunch at noon, and Mah Jongg at 1:15pm.
Midweek wellness includes Tai Chi at 9:30am Wednesdays and Thursdays with Nan Doty, and social gatherings like Ladies Coffee at 11am Thursdays. Thursdays also feature Souper Thursday, a free lunch event from 12 to 1pm. Fridays continue the shopping shuttle and include a men’s group from 9 to 11am, lunch at noon, and another session of Mah Jongg in the early afternoon.
May Special Events to Watch
May is packed with health and cultural highlights. On May 5th, a Wellness Clinic and blood pressure screenings will be offered from 12 to 1pm for drop-in participants. Haircuts will be available by appointment with Dee Dee on May 11th and May 18th, priced at $20 for a cut and $30 for a cut and blow dry.
May 12th at 11am brings a community-building Coffee with a Cop event, inviting attendees to connect directly with local law enforcement.
Health screenings continue with hearing checks by Shawn Woodbrey of At Home Hearing available by appointment on May 13th.
Music lovers can enjoy a spirited piano concert by Adele Dreyer on May 14th at 1pm, while the ECOA Board meets on May 15th at 8:30am followed by a Birthday Cafe celebrating May birthdays at noon.
On May 19th at 12:15pm, Patti Roads from the Edgartown Surveyors Office will explain the residential exemption process during lunch, offering critical information for homeowners.
A notable event on May 22nd at 2pm features a screening of the PBS documentary “Aging in America: Survive or Thrive” with a live Zoom discussion immediately following. That morning, the Friends of the ECOA meet at 9:30am, and free drop-in tech help is available with Rizwan Malik.
The community will also welcome Rhonda Garan, Executive Director of Sight Loss Services Cape Cod, on May 26th from 11am to 1pm to present resources for those dealing with sight loss.
Closing out the month on May 29th during lunch, special musical guest David Mintz, a Cultural Council grant recipient, will perform selections from the “Great American Songbook” on guitar.
