Fairport’s Yomar Castellano Named Player of the Year, Coaches Honored

UPDATE: Fairport’s basketball star Yomar Castellano has just been named the Division VII Northeast Lakes district player of the year by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association, marking a significant achievement for the team and the player. This announcement was made on March 3, 2026, and highlights Castellano’s outstanding performance throughout the regular season.

Castellano has been pivotal for the Skippers, leading the team with an impressive average of 19.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.4 steals per game. Fairport has enjoyed overwhelming success this season, boasting a record of 21-2 as they prepare for their D-VII district final on March 7. The team’s only losses came from Riverside and Glenville, showcasing their dominance in the league.

The recognition doesn’t stop with Castellano. Coach Dustin Ettinger has also been honored as the D-VII coach of the year, reflecting Fairport’s strong season and strategic prowess. The Chagrin Falls Tigers’ journey has also been remarkable, with Coach David Bargar being named co-coach of the year in Division V. The Tigers, who started the season 3-4, have surged back to earn the second seed in their division, riding a 16-game winning streak and showcasing a formidable defense that limits opponents to an average of 46.9 points per game.

In Division VI, Shawn McGregor from Kirtland has claimed coach of the year honors following the Hornets’ state semifinal appearance last year. Kirtland continues to evolve, adapting their offensive strategy to leverage their size and strength.

Several standout players have also been recognized across divisions. In Division I, Jack Kennedy and Tony Katava from Mentor earned first and second team spots respectively.
