Schooner added that her son, Alvarez, was so close to the bear that he “even felt its fur.” He recounted how the bear charged, narrowly missing him but targeting other students. “He keeps crying for his friends, and oh my goodness, right away he started praying for his friends,” she shared, emphasizing the emotional toll on the children involved.
The Acwsalcta School, an independent institution operated by the Nuxalk First Nation, announced on Facebook that it will be closed on Friday, with counseling services made available for affected students and families. “It’s hard to know what to say during this very difficult time. We are so grateful for our team and our students,” the school stated.
