The community of Milford and beyond is heartbroken following the passing of Mable Smidt on April 26, 2026. Known for her blunt honesty and boundless generosity, Mable’s death marks the end of an era for those who depended on her strength and warmth.

Mable Smidt, née Mable Marie Harkins, was born October 28, 1939, in Bliss, Nebraska. Throughout her 86 years, she was a pillar in multiple communities spanning Nebraska, Michigan, Iowa, and finally Milford, where she settled with her second husband, Darryl “Cowboy” Smidt.

A Life of Service and Family Devotion

Those who worked alongside Mable remember her from her decades at iconic Midwestern establishments including the Bil-Mar turkey factory, Jo & By’s Pub, and the Taco House. Her 30-year tenure as a beloved local figure made her a fixture known for warmth and solid work ethic.

She married her first husband Bernard Lee Fulkerth in 1959, raising five children together. Later, Mable married Darryl “Cowboy” Smidt and the couple shared a lifetime of adventures until his death, which she mourned deeply.

Family at the Heart of Her Legacy

Mable’s five children—Bernie (Deb), Daniel (Natascha), Randy (Connie), Dean, and Tammy Naab—alongside two stepchildren, Brenda (Gene) Nattress and Mike Smidt, survive her. Her nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild carry forward her memory and stories filled with life lessons and love.
