UPDATE: The Montesano Bulldogs have officially placed fourth in the 1A State Tournament after a tough weekend in Federal Way. The team faced a devastating 5-0 loss to Cedar Park Christian on Friday, followed by a heart-wrenching 3-2 defeat in a penalty shootout against Bear Creek on Saturday.
In the semifinal match on October 27, 2023, the Bulldogs (17-3-2) struggled against the top-seeded Eagles (17-3-1), who dominated the game from the outset. Cedar Park Christian’s senior forward, Deandra Dan, scored a natural hat trick, netting goals in the 15th, 32nd, and just before halftime, leaving Montesano in a daunting 3-0 hole at the break.
Despite the Bulldogs’ resilience, their offense was stifled by a staunch CPC defense, managing only three shots on goal throughout the match. Goalkeeper Izzie Taylor showcased her skills, making an impressive 15 saves but could not prevent the Eagles from sealing the victory with two additional goals in the second half.
“It was our most one-sided loss of the season,” said Montesano head coach Fidel Sanchez. “We need to find a way to close out games against top teams.”
Montesano’s hopes of a state title were dashed, but they carried a fighting spirit into the third-place match against Bear Creek on October 28, 2023. The Bulldogs initially took a commanding 2-0 lead with goals from Lainey Robinson and Jaelyn Butterfield, only to watch it slip away as the Grizzlies rallied to tie the game late.
After a tense overtime filled with missed opportunities, the match headed to a penalty shootout. Montesano faltered, with Bear Creek converting four of their five attempts, while the Bulldogs managed only one goal in the shootout. This marked another missed opportunity for the Bulldogs, who had previously let leads slip away in crucial matches.
“It’s frustrating to see our leads evaporate,” Sanchez noted. “We have to learn how to finish strong against tough competition.”
Despite the tough end to their season, Sanchez praised his team’s achievements, highlighting their ability to reach the Final Four for four of the last five seasons. “This year, we faced many challenges, including injuries. The girls showed incredible determination and heart,” he said.
As the dust settles on this year’s tournament, the Bulldogs will reflect on their journey, aiming to build on their successes and lessons learned for next season. With a solid foundation and a drive to improve, Montesano will be looking to make a deeper run next year.
