USD Men’s Tennis Shocks UCLA, Advances to NCAA Sweet 16

USD Men’s Tennis Makes History, Shuts Out UCLA to Reach Sweet 16

The University of San Diego men’s tennis team delivered a stunning performance today, blanking UCLA 4-0 to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the very first time in program history. Ranked 17th nationally, the Toreros overwhelmed No. 20 Bruins at the Hogan Tennis Center at Alcala Park, delivering a decisive victory that is shaking up the college tennis landscape.

This breakthrough came after a challenging regional matchup, with USD maintaining dominance and the momentum needed to push forward. Coach Ryan Keckley described the day as “joyous,” highlighting the team’s resilience and readiness after a tough Friday contest against UC Santa Barbara.

The Toreros set the tone early by clinching the doubles point—a critical advantage they’ve secured in 23 of 27 matches this season. The winning doubles pairs featured Adrien Berrut and Lambert Ruland, alongside Oliver Tarvet and Stian Klaassen. This early lead underpinned their dominating sweep in singles play.

On singles courts, the team kept the pressure up. Toreros’ singles victories included a commanding 6-4, 7-5 win by USD’s No. 19-ranked Oliver Tarvet over Spencer Johnson, ranked 56th. Klaassen followed with a resilient 6-2, 7-6 win against 40th-ranked Emon von Loben Sels. Ruland capped the sweep with a straight-set 6-3, 6-2 victory against Aadarsh Tripathi, sealing a 4-0 whitewash against a traditionally powerful UCLA squad.

“It’s a massive accomplishment for this program,” Tarvet said. “Winning the doubles point was massive for our confidence. I’m sort of speechless about what happened.”
